The state of West Virginia legalized race betting and established the West Virginia Racing Commission. Since then, it has overseen all the operations of racetracks in the state. In this state, horse racing and greyhound racing are very popular.

1933 – The first legal horse racetrack opened

Horse racing has been popular since before, but thanks to the legalization, it was time to start making legal bets. In 1933, Pari-mutuel horse racing betting got legalized on racetracks in WV. In December of the same year, the Charles Town Races, the first legal horse racing track, opened its doors. Since then, the popularity of this kind of betting has only got bigger.

1984 – There was a referendum about creating a state lottery

There was a referendum about should a state lottery should be formed. The state lottery was going to create new revenues for the state. The money could be used for public spending, and that moved the balance in its favor. The referendum passed, and the state lottery became a legal option.

1986 – The state created the West Virginia Lottery

West Virginia launched its state lottery in 1986. Back then, the jackpots were not that impressive. Its biggest was just $5000. In modern money, this is around $14 000. The highest lottery jackpot that has been won in the state was $170.5 million in cash. The lucky winner was Andrew Whittaker Jr., and the game he played was Powerball (2002).
